U13 (2013/2014)

U13 Development Philosophy

The U13 division marks an exciting time in a player’s development. According to Hockey Canada’s Long-Term Player Development model, this stage—often referred to as the "Learn to Train" phase—is where players start refining technical skills, deepening their understanding of the game, and being introduced to more structured team concepts.

At PCMHA, our U13 program continues to focus on individual skill development while introducing more advanced strategies, game tactics, and position-specific roles. Players at this level experience full-ice games, non-contact competitive play, and structured practices designed to challenge and engage them both physically and mentally.

Key elements of the U13 program include:

  • Continued skill development in skating, shooting, passing, and puck handling
  • Game sense and hockey IQ training, helping players understand positioning, teamwork, and decision-making
  • Goaltender development tailored to age-specific needs
  • Opportunities for competitive play, including league games, tournaments, and playoffs
  • A positive and inclusive environment that encourages leadership, responsibility, and a strong work ethic

The U13 experience is not just about building better hockey players—it’s about fostering confident, respectful athletes who value teamwork, effort, and sportsmanship. Whether a player’s goal is to compete at higher levels or simply enjoy the game, PCMHA’s U13 program provides a well-rounded, supportive platform to help them grow and succeed.

PCMHA offers A1, A2 & C divisions for U13.

What are we trying to achieve?

U13 Skill Development Model

Practice sessions will primarily focus on small-area games, station-based practices, and skill-focused drills. Ideally, 80% of practice time should be dedicated to developing individual skills and tactics, while only 20% should be reserved for team play and strategy or systems work.

Team concepts—such as defensive-zone positioning, forechecking strategies, and special teams—will be introduced either during ice sessions held before evaluations, selections, or tryouts, or after teams have been finalized.
